During the War of 1812, James Lawrence commanded the USS Chesapeake in a single-ship action against HMS Shannon. When wounded, he ordered his officers “Don’t give up the ship, fight her ‘til she sinks.” The Chesapeake was eventually overwhelmed by a boarding party, and Lawrence died of his wounds on June 4, 1813. His fellow officer Oliver Hazard Perry ordered a large blue ensign with “Don’t Give up the Ship” to be displayed on his vessel.
